July 18th

Tonight's Counterspin was about the political debate surrounding Iraq and issues of lobbying in the political process.

Adam came by the studio tonight to mix up the techno. The show last week at the Q-bar was a good time, and I'm getting throughly excited for 515 Alive coming up at the end of the month in Des Moines.

July 12th

Tonight's Counterspin was about radio (yay!) and how it's really dominated by conservative view points, the LPFM radio movement, and how changes in radio is affecting the black community.

Sharlo came by tonight to mix up the mad techno beats. Tomorrow night at the Q-bar Sharlo is going to be playing along with DJ Uplift, Sonar, and Heyland.
Doors are at 9pm, and you know this par-tay is going to be rockin!

July 5th

Tonight's Counterspin was about Micheal Moore's new film Sicko and about health care propaganda.

Mustafa Avdic came by the studio tonight to mix up the techno beats. Mustafa is leaving for a tour around Europe here in a few weeks. Matt Rissi ( aka DJ Sonar) and Mustafa just got signed by Provex, a sub-label of the Chicago Based Zuvuya Recordings. Both Rissi and Mustafa collaborated on the recently released Yugoslavia EP, which features remixes by Avex Axiom and ESP Woody McBride.

Also, be sure to check out Jackpot going on this weekend up in Cedar Rapids. Level Matrix, DJ Sonar, and DJ Brian Lee will all be mixing it up at Kaji.

Tonight I played Carl Cox Mixed Live 2nd Session - Area 2, Detroit.

June 14th

Counterspin link.

New night, new time. The Downtown Sound is now on Thursdays from 8-10pm, and I haven't gotten anyone booked for this new time. Tonight I played the 1st disk of Dave Seaman's album Global Underground 022 and a little bit of the second. I had forgotten how much better the second disk is though.

Thursday, June 7, 2007

June 7th

New night, new time, but same old technical problems. Tonight's show got off to a bit of a late start, but eventually things came together. Counterspin was about some reporter named Nancy Cleeland and about UPS workers and how they went on strike several years ago.

This weekend SWEAT is going on at the Picador. I played part of a set by Nate Unique and then some drum and bass mixed by C-Minus. Tittsworth is the main headliner, and you can check out the sets of his that i played here and here.

May 16th

So, last week was some craziness. Graduation, shows, drinking, and so forth. But damn it feels good to be done with school. As for the downtownsound, I'll be here all summer and the show will be too. Thanks to everyone who came out to student dj's united last Friday. It was a hella good time, although i didn't feel i brought my A-game to the decks (or even my B-game for that matter). But then again, I had just finished a 12 page paper on the cultural norms and premises involved in the persuasive strategies of advertisement's urging adolescents to not use drugs (what?) literally 20 minutes before running over to the Q-bar to go on stage. But people were dancing, and that's all that matters, eh? I wasn't able to make it out to the Angle Alanis show, but i heard it was a bumpin' good time.

Speaking of bumping (and other activities that end in -ing), A Pornstar's Ball 5.0 is going on this weekend up at Woody's in Cedar Rapids. Definitely a good time!

Anyways, tonight's Counterspin was about Iraq and Women (not Iraqi women, but Iraq and then women).

Mel Richards came by the studio tonight to throw down the banging house beats and the sick scratching sounds. Alteration always attracts and arouses another arrestingly almond-colored aardvark. (what??) We got the set recorded, and it should be up whenever i get around to posting the rest of the recorded shows.

May 9th

So, finals week is here. Sheeesh. Tests and studying = = downtown sound on an hour earlier and no counterspin this week. You can still listen online at counterspin's website by clicking the link in the side bar.

Also, wanted to let everyone know about a couple of shows going on at the Q-bar this weekend. Friday, it's
United State of Sound
featuring Avant Garde, myself, Christano, and Abrahm. It's sponsored by Red Bull, so expect a lot of great deals on red bull drinks.

Saturday teh Q-bar is getting some heavy hitters all up ins with Lost Vibrations featuring Angel Alanis and Frankie Vega. Murdoch, DJ Sharlo, and Hector will be throwing down the phat beats as well.

Needless to say, this weekend is shaping up to hold a lot of good dj shows, and you know it's going to be crazy IC style with graduation Saturday and the semester being over.

Look for more updates to this site sometime in the next few weeks, as i'm yet again behind in posting sets.

May 2nd

This week's episode of Counterspin was about Boris Yeltsin's affect on Russia, and the recent supreme court ruling on abortion.

Lady Espina was scheduled to appear on the show tonight, but unfortunately she sprained her ankle rather badly, and has to stay off of her feet for a few days. We're going to reschedule to have her come back sometime in June.

Lady Espina wanted me to let everyone know about Movement 2007: Detroit's Electronic Music Festival that's running May 26th - 28th.

april 25th

Last week's enlightenment show was great. Tons of people rocking out to the hardcore stylings of delta 9 as well as the varied styles of the other djs.

So, I'm sick, which sucks. This week's Counterspin was about taxes and Nigeria.

DJ Steve Blank came into the studio tonight to throw down some Baltimore Club Music which I hadn't heard of before. The set was amazing, lots of quick cuts and transfers. I got the set recorded, and it's posted in the sidebar.

Also, Nite Heat is comming up this weekend at Cabo in Cedar Rapids. Sonar, DJ ShawnShady, and DJ EricM are going to be throwin down at the reopening of Cabo. 5 dollars at the door.

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

April 17th

Today's counterspin was about the Don Imus thing and about metal tubes in Iraq.

The Noid and Jason Stone came by the studio tonight to mix up the trance and psy-trance. The Noid is playing at Enlightenment this weekend at the Q-bar here in town on Friday, along with Delta 9 from Drop Bass Network and a whole lot of other good DJs.

Their sets were recorded, and up, so check the side bar.

April 4th

Counterspin was about war spending, and some guy named Mike.

Dan Sherman came in tonight to lay down the deep house grooves. We got off to a late start due to some technical difficulties (which i thought i had all but worked out of the system). Also, I've up'ed some of the archived shows, and i'll have more of them up soon. Check the side bar for updated sets.

Reminder: Shake and Pop this weekend. Be there or be square!

March 28th

I opened up the show with this in case you were wondering.

This weeks Counterspin was about nuclear weapons and women.

TomG came in tonight and threw down the mad drum and bass. Link to the set coming soon.

There's a bunch of stuff coming up with the mission creek fest going on this weekend. Poison Control Center, The Envy Corps, and Tilly & the Wall, just to name a few.

Coming up on April 6th shake and pop: a dance party is happening at the picador, with mr. terrence parker throwing down a 2 hour set. holla!

update: thanks to my boy scott, there is now some hosting space for the downtown sound! i'll be posting links to all of the sets i've been recording + show flyers i've made.

here's the link to TomG's set: LINK

March 21st

Feels great to be back on the air after taking a break for spring break. Counterspin was good.

The 40oz Prophet came in to the studio tonight to throw down the mad techno beats. Great stuff.

Since i'm a slack ass, none of the updates to my blog have taken place yet. But they will, or maybe i'll just keep on saying i'm going to up date it.

EDIT: Here's the 40oz Prophet's set: LINK

March 7th

CounterSpin was awesome as always. DJ Christano of d’Amor® Recordings came into the studio tonight and rocked the jazzy house. I'm a little behind on my blog upkeep (flyers, recorded shows, etc), but i'll have things updated next week, which is spring break, biatches! (+)(+)

EDIT: here's the link to Christano's Set: LINK

February teh 14th

Counterspin was interesting as ever.

Andrew Reinner joined us in the studio tonight, throwing down a little bit of dis, a little bit of dat, some minimal techno, and so forth. The computer recorded the set, but it remains to be seen if I can actually figure out how to extract the audio. (psssshhhhhttttttt. Stupid 30,000 dollar computer program. Can't even export properly.)

Two events going on in Cedar Rapids this weekend, Japan Love on Friday, and Dream Worlds: Part 2 on Saturday.

Wednesday, February 7, 2007

February 07

Things actually went off with out a hitch this week! Counterspin started at the right time, and there were no technical difficultues getting everything set up.

Lady Espina, a KRUI alumnus, spun some mad minimal house / german techno. She's also playing at Kaji Japanese Grill with DJ Sonar and DJ Bryan Lee on Friday, February 16th. I caught a hip-hop show once at Kaji, and it was deffinatley a good time, as i'm sure this will be too.

Oh, Lady Espina also wanted me to let everyone know about The Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF), which is happening May 26th this year. The DEMF is an electronic dance music showcase held in Detroit each Memorial Day weekend, which started in 2000. Check out http://paxahau.com/ for more infos.

UPDATE: Here's a link to the show that was recorded, it might work: downtown_sound_2_7_07.mp3

January 31st

Another Wednesday, another great show. Collision and Aktif couldn't make it in tonight, but Abrahm and Trevor came in to mix up some of that great psy-trance. Both are also playing at Trans-Dimensional Shift 2, which is this weekend! Holla!

CounterSpin started at the correct time, but the technical difficulties re-appeared with our internet stream. Appologies to those who missed it, but the studio computer should catch it, and if so, i'll put up a link.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

January 24th

Teh internets were down again in the studio, and we got off to a late start with the Counterspin. I had to cut it short so Scott E could get on the decks and mix it up.

for the full episode, check http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=3032

The technical difficulties never end, as the computer in the studio failed to record Scott's mix. But, check out his webpage at: http://www.waxdj.com/djs/92/

Scott's playing at Trans-Dimensional Shift 2 along with Collision & Aktif, who will be in next week.

peace out!

January 17th

DJ Sonar ran into some car trouble and couldn't make it down tonight. Instead I played his PSB4 NYE mix, which you can find here: http://bassic.net/audio/PSB4/

Counterspin was interesting as always, check out this week's episode at:
http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=3030
